Background of the study
Online communication requires not only clear language but also effective use of pragmatic strategies to convey tone, emotion, and intent. In Nigeria, WhatsApp and Facebook serve as primary platforms where users employ diverse pragmatic markers—such as emojis, interjections, and informal expressions—to manage conversations and express attitudes (Ibrahim, 2023). WhatsApp messages, often personal and conversational, feature spontaneous and context-specific pragmatic devices, while Facebook posts and comments tend to reflect more structured pragmatic approaches influenced by public engagement (Okafor, 2024). This study evaluates the pragmatic strategies used on these platforms, focusing on how they facilitate effective communication and contribute to the overall tone and meaning of digital interactions. By comparing the strategies employed on WhatsApp and Facebook, the research aims to uncover the interplay between digital affordances and pragmatic behavior, providing insights into how Nigerian users adapt their language to various online contexts (Adebayo, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Although pragmatic strategies are crucial in online communication, there is limited comparative research on their use across different platforms in Nigeria. Existing studies often treat digital pragmatics as a single phenomenon, overlooking the contextual differences between private (WhatsApp) and public (Facebook) interactions (Chukwu, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of how platform-specific features shape pragmatic behavior and the effectiveness of communication, limiting the development of nuanced models of digital pragmatics (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze pragmatic strategies on Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook.
  2. To compare the pragmatic devices used in private versus public online interactions.
  3. To assess the impact of these strategies on communication effectiveness.

Research questions

  1. What pragmatic strategies are used on WhatsApp and Facebook?
  2. How do platform contexts influence these strategies?
  3. What is the effect of these strategies on overall digital communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative evaluation of online pragmatic strategies in Nigerian social media. The findings will offer valuable insights for communication scholars and practitioners by clarifying how contextual differences influence language use, thereby informing improved digital communication practices (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to examining WhatsApp messages and Facebook posts among Nigerian users; it does not extend to other platforms or offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Pragmatic Strategies: Techniques used to manage conversation and convey meaning.
  • Digital Pragmatics: The study of language use in online contexts.
  • Online Communication: Interactions that occur on digital platforms.
